Witch Trial

Anna Pernekker was accused with being a witch on 23 March, 1679. The accused woman put aside her divine fears, and we cannot exactly know how, but she had been inspired by the Devil and together with her similar associates she committed many evil actions. In the past year of 1678 around Saint Paul’s day, during shining daytime, they [Anna Pernekker and her associates] picked up Gergely Biró’s wife who lives here in Kőszeg at the Köböl vineyard and pushed her against the ground so that she became mute for three days.

She also killed Pál Varga who confessed that Anna Perneker was his murdedrer at the hour of his death. Beyond that, she had been evil and had involved herself with the Devil during her whole lifetime. For that reason the jury requires that she should be punished and sentenced for the stake to be burnt.

We do not know how, but the accused woman had been involved with many evil actions and associated herself with other evil women, she had not been afraid of the Magistrate, and left God inspired by mean thoughts, in the noble city of Kőszeg and Vas county she destroyed many people’s life.
